Joining the Diocese

Information for congregations considering affiliation with the Missionary Diocese of the South and Ozarks.

The Missionary Diocese welcomes congregations of all backgrounds. Whether Anglican or not, we invite you to begin a conversation about joining the United Episcopal Church of North America.

Affiliation with the Missionary Diocese of the South and Ozarks means joining a community committed to biblical orthodoxy, classical Anglican worship, and the spread of the Gospel. We are a part of the United Episcopal Church of North America, which upholds the classical Anglican formularies, including the Thirty-nine Articles, the historic episcopate, and the 1928 Book of Common Prayer.

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens to our church property?

Congregations affiliating with the diocese retain ownership of their property. We do not require congregations to transfer property title to the diocese as a condition of affiliation. Each congregation's property situation is unique, and we work with vestries and leadership to ensure the arrangement is clear and mutually understood.

Do we need to use the 1928 Book of Common Prayer?

The 1928 Book of Common Prayer is the standard for the diocese, and its use is expected in affiliated congregations. We believe the historic Prayer Book connects us to the long line of English-speaking Anglicans stretching back to the Reformation and provides a stable foundation for our common worship. Congregations coming from non-Anglican backgrounds are supported through the transition to Prayer Book worship.

What does the transition process look like?

The process typically begins with a conversation with the Bishop or a diocesan representative. From there, the congregation's leadership meets formally with diocesan leadership, a mutual agreement is drafted, and — pending approval — the congregation is received into the diocese. The timeline varies depending on the congregation's situation, but we strive to make the process straightforward and unhurried.

How do we begin?

Simply reach out. Use the contact form to send a message explaining your congregation's situation and interest. The Bishop or a diocesan representative will follow up to begin the conversation. There is no obligation involved in making initial contact.
